Ten Hag sure more goals will come for Ronaldo and explains Antony sub decision

Cristiano Ronaldo will get more goals after netting on his return to Manchester United s line-up says Erik ten Hag, who explained Antony s early substitution in the 3-0 Europa League win over Sheriff was planned.

Ronaldo was dropped for the draw at Chelsea last time out following his refusal to appear as a substitute during the previous game against Tottenham, but rounded off a routine 3-0 victory that secured the Red Devils top-two place in Group E.

It marked the Portuguese superstar s first goal of the season at Old Trafford and Ten Hag, who saw Diego Dalot and Marcus Rashford also score, is sure there is more to come.

Seeing Ronaldo get his goal was great, Ten Hag said during his post-match interview with BT Sport. He created, the team created for him, and we…

Barcelona 1-1 Deportivo Alaves: Sergi´s Barca held as Aguero forced off before half-time

Barcelona s struggles continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Deportivo Alaves at Camp Nou in their first game since the dismissal of Ronald Koeman.

Under the temporary stewardship of Sergi Barjuan, Memphis Depay opened the scoring early in the second half as the hosts sought to overcome consecutive LaLiga losses.

But the Blaugrana were pegged back almost immediately as Luis Rioja netted a fine equaliser for the visitors.

Another concern for Barca saw a distressed Sergio Aguero forced off before half-time on his first home LaLiga start.

16 Barcelona have taken 16 points from 11 games in LaLiga 2021/22 (W4 D4 L3), equalling their worst start at this stage in the three points for a win era (also 16 in the 2000/2001 and 2002/03 campaigns). Obstacle. <…

Hitzfeld focusing on job at hand

Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld is not relying on England to beat Montenegro and is fully focused on getting the job done against Wales.

Wales and Switzerland lock horns in a Euro 2012 Group G qualifier at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea with the visitors still in with a chance of making the play-offs.

Hitzfeld’s side are third in the group with eight points from six matches, three behind Montenegro, who host leaders England in Podgorica.

With two matches left in the group stage, Switzerland will hope to pick up maximum points and also need Montenegro to slip up, but Hitzfeld is not concerned with that.

We had a difficult start (to the qualifying campaign) but I have always believed in my team, Hitzfeld said.

We have the chance to qualify fo…

Prediction: Turkey vs Croatia

10th November 2011

This is likely to be one of the most interesting ties in the Euro 2012 play-offs, with the match at Turk Telekom Arena expected to bring us plenty of excitement. Neither side have been too impressive in the Euro 2012 qualifiers, but everything will be forgiven if they just manage to make it to the final tournament.

After Turkey finished the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign in third place in their group, the national team chiefs decided to replace Fatih Terim with Guus Hiddink, hoping that the Dutchman would be able to finally get the team to play to their potential. Turkey started the next qualifying campaign really well, beating Kazakhstan and Belgium in their first two games, but back to back defeats to Germany and Azerbaijan were seen as major se…

Benfica sign Luis Felipe

Primeira Liga champions Benfica have strengthened their defensive options with the signing of right-back Luis Felipe.

The Brazilian rose through the youth ranks at Palmeiras in his homeland, and made his first-team breakthrough in 2010.

Head coach Jorge Jesus has now added the 23-year-old to his squad ahead of the 2014-15 campaign, in which Benfica will attempt to defend the league title, as well as the Taca de Portugal and Taca da Liga.

Luis Felipe is excited by the challenge and believes the Portuguese game is ideal for his attributes.

I m a strong footballer, he told Benfica s official website. The style of Portuguese football suits me.

Portuguese football is [similar] to Brazil. It is a strong championship.

It is played at great sp…

FIFA World Cup: Team of the tournament

With the 2014 FIFA World Cup having come to an end, we summarise the star performers in Brazil.

It seems only yesterday that Brazil were kicking off the tournament with a thrilling, if somewhat controversial, 3-1 win over Croatia in Sao Paulo.

Some five weeks and 64 games later, football s greatest event reached its climax with Germany defeating Argentina by a single extra-time goal at the Maracana.

There were an abundance of star performers on show in South America, making it a very difficult job picking a team of the tournament, but here is our final selection.

In goal we have Manuel Neuer, who almost redefined the role of a sweeper-keeper in Brazil. His supreme shot-stopping, awareness and use of the ball helped Germany to keep five clean sheets en rou…

Arsenal confident of Lemar deal

Arsenal remain confident of securing a deal for Monaco midfielder Thomas Lemar, according to the Daily Star.

Lemar looked set to secure a move to the Emirates Stadium on transfer deadline day only for a deal not to materialise as Alexis Sanchez’s proposed switch to Manchester City collapsed.

Arsene Wenger has said any bid for Lemar does not rest on Sanchez being sold though the Chilean, who is in the final year of his contract with the Gunners is likely to again be pursued in January.

Lemar is closing in on one hundred appearances for Monaco since signing from Caen in the summer of 2015 while he has scored nineteen goals – nine of which coming in the league last season as his side clinched the Ligue 1 title.

He has been capped seven times by Fran…

Manchester United fans have to love Fellaini – Mourinho

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has backed Marouane Fellaini to earn the love of the club s supporters.

Fellaini has been an unpopular figure with sections of the Old Trafford faithful since being signed by David Moyes in 2013, but he excelled in the 3-1 Premier League win at Bournemouth on Sunday.

Mourinho acknowledged that Fellaini has work to do to turn around supporters opinions, but suggested the midfielder will be an important player for United this season.

With Fellaini I always have the feeling that he was not loved by the general Red people, Mourinho told MUTV.

But if he plays like he s playing now, they have to love him because he s being so important for us.

[Eric] Bailly and Daley [Blind] played well, the midfield playe…

Who is Luka Jovic? The Bundesliga goal machine linked with Barcelona

Luka Jovic is the Bundesliga s most prolific forward this season and his performances for Eintracht Frankfurt have not gone unnoticed.

With a league-high 14 goals and 20 in all competitions, Jovic has been linked with Barcelona and reports have even gone as far to say the 21-year-old already has a personal agreement to join the LaLiga champions.

A product of Serbian giants Red Star Belgrade, Jovic – like many before him – was lured away from the capital by Benfica in 2016. He only made four appearances at Estadio da Luz, eventually moving to Frankfurt on a two-year loan deal.

The transfer included an option to buy and Frankfurt s decision to invest in Jovic has proved to be a masterstroke when you consider the reported fee stands at €7million and they coul…

Bayer Leverkusen confirm Demirbay signing

Bayer Leverkusen have announced the signing of attacking midfielder Kerem Demirbay from fellow Bundesliga side Hoffenheim.

Demirbay, who joined Hoffenheim from Hamburg in 2016, has scored four Bundesliga goals for Julian Nagelsmann s side this term, providing eight assists, and has signed a five-year deal with Leverkusen for an undisclosed fee.

The news that Leverkusen have bolstered their midfield contingent may, however, cast further doubt over Julian Brandt s future, with Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich all reportedly interested in the 23-year-old, while Kai Havertz has also been linked with a move away.

Bayer 04 have always played attractive attacking football, Demirbay told the club s official website. This style of play suits me and I m re…
