Watford’s maverick attempt to match that Leicester football miracle

STING IN THE TAIL

While the assist with which he teed up his successor Claudio Ranieri to win the title for Leicester was the managerial equivalent of Mike Fillery’s routine cross to Clive Allen ahead of that sublime triple drag-back and finish for QPR against West Ham on an Upton Park bog back in 1984, Nigel Pearson’s impressive feat in keeping them in the Premier League against all odds back in 2015 certainly paved the way for the footballing miracle that would follow 12 months later. When Watford sweep all before them and march to similarly unlikely glory next season, Pearson’s role should also be remembered. But for now fans have the more pressing concerns of hoping their under-performing team can earn the p…

Arsenal are washed away as resurgent Newcastle ride wave of fan fervour

After a season of gentle optimism, global improvement and reasons to believe, it felt as if it was all going to come down to this. The question was if Mikel Arteta’s best José Mourinho impression after the north London derby, ostentatiously avoiding explicit comment and covering for his Arsenal players by making himself the story, was to have the desired effect.

In a season of the Spaniard’s team providing half-answers to many, they did it again at St James’ Park. They had the guts but they lacked the nerve required of them on a Monday night that was always going to be more challenging than some suggested. Tottenham’s follow-up win, laboriously prised from Burnley on Sunday lunchtime, had knocked the ball flush into their court. The…

Pierre Sage counsels stability and unity after tumultuous time at Lyon

What a difference a few weeks – and a few managerial changes – can make. The Bad Gones, Lyon’s largest ultras group, publicly chastised the players in what was ultimately Laurent Blanc’s final game as manager at the start of September.

Pierre Sage is the third manager to sit in the dugout since Blanc’s departure, and while it would be hyperbolic to state that Olympique Lyonnais are once again becoming a juggernaut of French football, the scenes of jubilation after Wednesday’s 1-0 victory over Nantes showed a cohesion and a communion rediscovered.

The contrast is stark. Forlorn figures accepted the very public, and humiliating, berating from their own fans following a 4-1 thrashing at home to Paris Saint-…

Tucker Minter gets first eNASCAR win of 2024 at Nashville

Tucker Minter put together a dominant performance on Tuesday night, avoiding a sophomore slump with a victory at a virtual Nashville Superspeedway in Lebanon, Tenn., as part of the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series. Minter won three races as a rookie in 2023 but had not yet landed in victory lane this season. He reached the Championship 4 last year and will be headed to the playoffs once again thanks to Tuesday's win. "Man, it's definitely relief," said Minter, who resides in Warrenton, Va. "Been so close all season long and just haven't been able — haven't had the luck I guess in some ways. … With how the playoff picture is, it was so tight, you know, sweating that, so it just feels really relieving going into the Chicago Street Course next week. …

Arena Football TD Celebration An Extended Tribute To The Rock

Tonight the Jacksonville Sharks celebrated a blowout win over Tampa Bay and a berth into the AFL playoffs with a touchdown celebration taken straight from The Most Electrifying Move In Sports Entertainment. Why Your Team Sucks 2019: Atlanta Falcons

Some people are fans of the Atlanta Falcons. But many, many more people are NOT fans of the Atlanta Falcons. This 2019 Deadspin NFL team preview is for those in the latter group. Read all the previews so far here. Your team: Atlanta Falcons. Second-best football team in their own stadium. Your 2018 record: 7-9. That includes a 1-4 start, followed later by a five-game skid. Almost like there’s something in this team’s past that keeps nagging at them, dragging them down. Well, I certainly hope they COME BACK from whatever it is that’s clawing away at their collective psyche. I think everyone age 25-UP hopes likewise. For the second consecutive season, the Falcons pissed away a supremely talented roster thanks to coaching so glaringly poor it could be seen from Mars, unconscionabl…

Why Your Team Sucks 2012: Baltimore Ravens

Some people are fans of the Baltimore Ravens. But many, many more people are NOT fans of the Baltimore Ravens. This 2012 Deadspin NFL team preview is for those in the latter group. Read the other Why Your Team Sucks 2012 previews here. 1. There's no white trash like Baltimore white trash. I've lived in Maryland for eight years and I can tell you that northern Maryland white trash occupies its own distinct niche of the white-trash market. It's as if the suburban Baltimore area were populated exclusively by fifth-grade gym teachers. These are the kind of people who wear camouflage Zubaz without a hint of irony. Every baby born in Baltimore County is born with a goatee, even the girls. If you could form a Jim Rome listener in a lab (and why wouldn't you? THEY'RE CL…

Your 2008 USC Song Girl Scouting Report

The USC Song Girls have already given us so much. We've thrilled to their daring poolside athleticism, shown concern over their reckless abuse of our natural resources, marveled at their bikini greatness, investigated their booties and laughed at their sheer, utter blondness. They even write for ESPN! So they hold a special place in out hearts, as they do for you I'm sure. That's why we anticipate the new crop of talent with the same eagerness of the NFL Draft, with the added bonus of there being no booing Jets fans. As the photo here shows, we have a real prospect coming on board this year: Lindsey (on the left), it appears, has all the tools; and she's already one of Busted Coverage's Top 3 USC Song Girls To Watch This Season. With her anchoring the tea…

Five Trade Destinations for Mookie Betts

data-mm-id=”_4gnw0kubx”>The Boston Red Sox are looking to rebound from a disappointing 2019 campaign that saw them finish in third place in the American League East. That was especially embarrassing considering that they paid $13 million above Major League Baseball's luxury tax and still failed to make the playoffs. In 2020, the Red Sox hope to trim payroll, and the biggest name left on their ledger is 2018 AL MVP outfielder Mookie Betts. Last season, Betts hit .295 with 80 runs batted in while scoring a major league-leading 125 runs. Many teams could use his services, if the price is right.1. San Diego PadresThe most likely option at this point, although according to Dennis Lin of the Athletic (behind paywall), even this is looking like a long shot. In return for Betts, the Red S…
